president obama done for labor in these last four years? >> well, i think he's tried to do quite a bit. i think in his heart he definitely supports, you know, working families. part of the outcome piece is what gets through the u.s. congress. so he definitely supported health care bill much more like speaker pelosi than what we ended up getting through the senate finance committee, onto the senate floor and eventually adopted a year later. he definitely supported workers' rights legislation. he definitely supported much more agressive moves to stop the foreclosures. he definitely supported climate change. so part of this is really -- you know, we would love to see more active white house support for these democracy initiatives so that the change that i'm sure he still believes in has some reality to it instead of just on the back bench somewhere. >> did he fight hard enough? i don't want to put you on the spot. yeah, i want to put you on the spot. >> you can put me on the spot. >> i wonder why labor keeps rolling over for the democrats and for the president. >> we're trying not to roll

alleged sensorship of its new year's message calling for democracy. citizens have been showing support for the journalist. >>> a u.s. pro gun lobby group has aired a tv ad critical of president barack obama's gun control plans. the national rifle association ran the ad as president obama tightened gun control lawis. the ad calls obama an elitist hypocrite. >> are the president's kids more important than yours? then why is he skeptical about putting armed security in our schools when his kids are protected by armed guards at their schools? >> white house spokesperson jay carney issued a statement saying the ad is repugnant and cowardly and that most americans agree that a president's children should not be used as pawns in a political fight. >>> people in the united amariter are worried about their exports. the train on the supply is growing. now this fossil fuel driven nation is considering alternatives. >> reporter: an international exhibition is under way focusing on water supplies and renewable energy. the crown prince of the united arab emirates says they realize they have

grand bargain, as he calls it, is over. there was a feeling over the past couple of years that both sides would cut taxes and raise entitlements and get a grand bargain. that seemed to be a lost opportunity. obama seems to be moving away from it, congress may have squabbled over the debt ceiling, but they are not going to deal with the essential problem in a meaningful way. >> i am reading a book on lbj. jack kennedy was having the same problem with congress. everything was being sidetracked, they were not going anywhere. >> that is true. i would say this, as far as what senator obama said in 2006, consistency is the hobgoblin of small minds. if there was a different attitude. we have raised the debt ceiling 70-plus times. there has always been that sense of we're not going to vote to raise the other guy's debt ceiling, but there was always the understanding that we would provide the votes in the final analysis. the president's party did that. right now, what you have is a situation where the republican party is reduced to its lowest standing in the history of "the wall street journ

confidence on the part of investors in foreign governments? i mean, even three years ago barack obama expressed concern about the long term debt and the confidence of people in the u.s. government. take a listen. >> there may be some tax provisions that can encourage businesses to hire sooner rather than sitting on the sidelines. so we're taking a look at those. i think it is important, though, to recognize that if we keep on adding to the debt, even in the midst of this recovery, that at some point, people could lose confidence in the us economy in a way that could actually lead to a double-dip recession. >> i remember that well. and at the time it was going on, i do occasionally find myself in meetings with very serious people myself. i guess i am personally one now and then. there was this widespread view among people, and not all of it venal, not all of it self-interested, that somehow things were hanging by a thread. that any day now we could have a run on u.s. government debt, which was wrong. but, okay, i can see how people could for a while have believed that. but a lot of tim
